„The CD is based on materials collected by Bartók, Kodály and Antal Molnár in Gyergyó between 1907 and 1911. The Gyergyó Basin is in East Transylvania (today Harghita county, Romania), with Gyergyószentmiklós as its centre. The discovery of the pentatonic tunes of the Székel y people preserving an archaic Hungarian culture was a milestone in Hungarian music history. These Székely tunes – like the miraculous stag in the ancient Hungarian myth –showed a new road, a new haven for composers so far strongly influences by foregin music, leading them to find a new and unique voice which was genuinely their own.

I warmly recommend these vocal and instrumental tunes to those who are interested in the sources of world-famous Hungarian compositions and in the old music of Gyergyó only traces of which survive today.

The publication is also a photo album of the late 19th-early 20th century Gyergyó. András Berecz’ recording of Hungarian folk tales also includes folk songs. The book which accompanies the recording, illustrated by Líviusz Gyulai – is pleasing to the eye and the ear, but most of all warms the spirit and makes a good gift for both children and adults. The tales on this recording are from Berecz’ collection work in rural Háromszék, Udvarhely and Csik regions of Transylvania, Bukovina and Moldavia. He brings the tales alive for us using the local dialects of the Hungarian people of those areas.

"This CD was born in the year of the Hungarian Millenium. The songs and stories heard here are not historical, they haven't died for their country under a line of torches; they have instead been born in the light of sustaining virtues and hopes. They record a few moments of our survival, perseverance, ascent and its diverging paths - sometimes in clear pictures, other times mysteriously or unconsciously. One species of bird flys on an unusual course avoiding the islands that would make good resting places, seeking out stormier areas. The routes follow a mountain ridge sunken beneath the sea. A compact sealed with the blood of an old alliance under the Hungarian crown has been renewed and placed on the big road which lies before us. I fancy that the thoughts narrated and sung herein cover some of the saddles an peads on the mysterious sunken mountain ridge below the long road. I also believe that they must have been soaring there in Hunarian history in the 1000th year after the birth of Christ." - András Berecz
