The Renaissance revival was greeted with delight by music lovers around the world at the start of the New Millennium. The popular British group was particularly welcome in the Far East where they performed in 2001. ‘In The Land Of The Rising Sun’ is a 2CD comprising 15 tracks recorded ‘live’ in concert in Japan. It features superb vocalist Annie Haslam, whose presence graces a progressive rock ensemble that first achieved fame in the 1970s with a charming blend of classical and folk themes.

Among the original band members are guitarist Michael Dunford, Terence Sullivan (drums) and Mickey Simmonds (keyboards) along with Rave Tesar (piano) and David Keyes (bass). They tackle such newer songs as ‘Lady From Tuscany’ and older favourites from past albums, like ‘Mother Russia’, ‘Trip To The Fair’ and ‘Ashes Are Burning’ - a mammoth 20 minute epic.

The British art rock band head towards the end of their decade long career on this 1982 album originally recorded for Miles Copeland’s Illegal Records. Among the songs are Bonjour Swansong written by guitarist Michael Dunford and the Cornish poetess Betty Thatcher, and Ukraine Ways by Dunford and bass player John Camp. These unmissable performances display the band’s the seductive blend of instrumetal sophistication, poetry and Annie’s ethereal vocal magic. By the end of the 1970s Renaissance was established as one of the UK’s premiere rock bands, whose blend of classical, folk, jazz and rock genres resulted in a highly attractive sound and style. Hugely popular in America and Europe where they toured consistently, the band also produced a series of excellent albums.

‘Azure D’Or’ was one of the last released at the end of a turbulent decade, when punk was overtaking progressive rock in popularity. Nevertheless, this 1979 album did well in the UK charts and includes - among its diverse tracks - two that were released as singles, notably ‘Jekyll And Hyde’ and ‘The Winter Tree’, both written by guitarist Michael Dunford and lyricist Betty Thatcher.

With shining vocals from the delightful Annie Haslam, this CD captures Renaissance at their best. It is also the last to feature long term drummer Terry Sullivan and pianist John Tout, before they quit the band to seek pastures new. Produced by David Hentschel - famed for his work with Genesis - this is a superior and unmissable piece of art rock.

It was the dream of many young groups during the golden age of rock to record and even tour with a full orchestra. The Beatles and their use of strings had inspired many rockers to experiment with the classics, notably Deep Purple, Yes and ELP. But one of the most musically successful collaborations featured Renaissance. The British group was thrilled to be able to record this album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978, and the results delighted fans around the world.

The album showcases their major work ‘A Song For All Seasons’ that epitomises their love of structured, melodic composition. But the eight tracks on this richly entertaining CD also include much shorter, more compact items, such as ‘Opening Out’, ‘Closer Than Yesterday’ and ‘Kindness (At The End)’. A particular highlight is the inclusion of the band’s best known single tracks, ‘Northern Lights’ - a Top Ten smash hit in 1978.

Renaissance, one of the most creative of all the UK art rock groups, flourished in the 1970s.

They have many studio albums such as the classic ‘Turn Of The Cards’, ‘Ashes Are Burning’ and ‘Scheherazade’ to their credit, featuring the superb vocals of Annie Haslam and the melodies of guitarist Michael Dunford,.

However, the group is most proud of its ‘Live At Carnegie Hall’ set, first released in 1976. This extended 8 track, 2 CD re-issue celebrates the superb concert they gave backed by the New York Philharmonic. It was a high point of their career and celebrated their popularity in America.

.Although the band would later find fame with a completely different line-up, Renaissance began life as a group formed by former Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim Mccarthy. Joined by vocalist Jane Relf, keyboard player John Hawken and bassist Louis Cennamo, Renaissance successfully melded Classical, Folk and Rock influences into a unique sound that perfectly suited the emerging Progressive era. Recorded soon after the band ‘s self-titled debut, (also released by Esoteric thismonth), Illusion sessions saw the departure of Jim Mccarthy and John Hawken and was completed with a different line-up. As a result the album only gained a European release by Island. Despite this fate, the album contained excellent material such as the lengthy Past Orbits Of Dust.This Esoteric Recordings edition is newly re-mastered and adds three bonus tracks, two recorded for the 1970 unreleased film Schizom and a 1976 demo by Keith Relf.
