If 5. jazz-rock

Enlarge this picture! THE BRAND NEW ALBUM FROM THE RE-FORMED GROUP, FEATURING TWO ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS. Pioneering 1970s Jazz Rock group IF announced its re-formation in 2015, and now presents a new studio recording featuring two of its original founding members, saxophonist Dave Quincy and guitarist Terry Smith, together with a new vocalist and rhythm section on this latest album. The original band featuring Quincy and Smith recorded four studio albums with sequentially-numbered titles before they split up in the early 1970s. The other two original members, Dick Morrissey and J.W.Hodkinson, have since passed away, but the interest in IF has been sustained over recent years with the remastered back catalogue. With this new recording, Dave Quincy and Terry Smith are now reunited to continue that interrupted sequence four decades on, and more ‘live’ dates are planned for 2016.

Terry Smith: Guitar

Europe '72 jazz-rock

Enlarge this picture! Europe '72 consists of four alternate takes from the "live in the studio" sessions which produced If's fourth album, Waterfall, and three extended tracks recorded in concert. Singer J. W. Hodkinson is less effective on the in-concert recordings, straining to be heard above the band in the live context. However, the playing is hot throughout, showing what a potent force the band was during its too-short existence. "What Did I Say About the Box, Jack," a highlight from the debut album, is stretched out over twenty minutes here, providing each of these fine musicians plenty of opportunity to show his chops. Although it's not the place for the uninitiated to start (the first album is the one), Europe '72 is a welcome addition to the recorded legacy of this excellent jazz-rock septet.
